All of a sudden Google Maps on my W960i stopped working!!!
</p>
<p>
At first I only noticed that the MIDlet permissions screen was not being displayed so I was happy that a previous annoyance had gone away although intrigued as to how it happened. Unfortunately I soon discovered that Google Maps could not access the Internet.
</p>
<p>
The MIDlet permissions screen is a UIQ feature to ensure that Java applications have your permission to access protected system features on your phone such as connecting to the Internet. Software authors can have their applications software signed to avoid this annoying step but signing costs money and more importantly a lot of hassle.
</p>
<p>
The displayed error message read...
</p>
<p align="center">
<font color="blue">
<b>Need network access</b></br>
"Need network access: This application cannot be used until
you grant it permission to send and receive data over the network."
</font>
</p>
<p>
Countless times I changed settings at Tools -> Control Panel -> Security -> MIDlet accounts and MIDlet permissions but to no avail (possibly the most annoying feature of UIQ)
</p>
<p>
Eventually I gave up and went back to the Vodafone SMS installer message to download and reinstall the entire Google Maps for Mobiles application. The install was completed in a couple of minutes and Google Maps was soon working again with the MIDlet security check feature restored.
</p>
<p>
It's a complete mystery why Google Maps would stop working like that on my Sony Ericsson W960i.

Installing Sky for Mobiles On My W960i</a> to read how to obtain and install the
files to run Sky for Mobiles on a W960i.
</p>
<p>
This article describes how to use Sky for Mobiles.
</p>
<p>
<b>Sky for Mobiles</b>
</p>
<p>
The Sky for Mobiles application runs on your phone and gives you access to the
various features of <a href="http://anytime.sky.com/mobile.aspx">Sky Anytime on Mobile</a>.
</p>
<ul>
<li>The entire 7-day Sky TV Guide</li>
<li>Remote Record - set your Sky+ box to record from your phone!</li>
<li>Latest news updates from Sky News and Sky Sports</li>
<li>Daily round-ups from the celebrity world, plus movie trailers and reviews</li>
<li>Live scoreboards from top sports events, so you won't miss a thing </li>
</ul>
<p>
The main reason I want to run Sky for Mobiles on my W960i is so that I can use
my phone to tell my Sky+ box to record programs when I am away from home.
</p>
<p>
Please note that Sky for Mobiles is not fully compatible with the W960i phone. The good news is
that most features do work and in my opinion is it certainly worth using Sky for
Mobiles and in particular the Remote Record feature for Sky+ does work on the W960i.
</p>
<p>
Before proceeding to follow any instructions in this article please ensure that you
have followed the install and setup instructions in the previous article
<a style="color: #ff6633" href="http://myw960i.blogspot.com/2008/02/installing-sky-for-mobiles.html">
Installing Sky for Mobiles On My W960i</a>.</p>
<p>
<b>Navigation</b></p>
<p>
Unfortunately the W960i is not totally compatible with Sky for Mobiles.</p>
<p>
For some commands you can use the stylus to select the menu bar at the bottom of the
touch screen. Unfortunately
you cannot use the stylus to select items on the screen.</p>
<p>
Use the jog dial on your W960i to scroll vertically through menu items and press the jog dial
to select.
You can use the jog dial to scroll vertically on most Sky for Mobile screens.</p>
<p>
If items in a menu are numbered then you can press the number on the keypad to
select the menu item.</p>
<p>
When viewing channels you can press numbers on the keypad to navigate.<br>
2 is page up<br>
8 is page down<br>
4 is backwards 24 hours<br>
6 is forwards 24 hours<br>
5 is select the current menu item</p>
<p>
Unfortunately there is no way to scroll horizontally using the W960i so some
features of Sky for Mobiles are at best difficult and at worst impossible to use
with the W960i.
</p>
<p>

<p>
The secret to the login screen is to enter your password followed by your username.
</p>
<p>
Use the jog dial to scroll to the password box and press the jog dial. This will cause a text entry window to open. Repeat to enter your username.
</p>
<p>
If you try to enter your username first then Sky for Mobiles will crash. The good news is that this is only
place I can cause Sky for Mobiles to crash and your login and password is
remembered each time you run the program so you won't have to enter your details
again.

The record request will be sent to your Sky+ box using the satellite. This

<p>
To open the Search screen you must go to the the Sky TV Guide menu and press the * 'star' key.</p>

<b>Remote record...</b>
</p>
<p>
If you select Record then a message will be sent via satellite to your Sky+
digibox. Not that the recording request is actually sent with the TV signal that
is received by your satellite dish. Remote record does not use your telephone
connection.</p>
<p>
Obviously for Remote Record to work you must have previously created a My Sky
account at <a href="htto://www.sky.com">www.sky.com</a> and registered your Sky+
viewing card number and your mobile phone number. For details see

<p>
Sky say that it can take up to 30 minutes for the recording request to be
received but in my tests the request is received instantly and within a few
seconds of sending the request the Sky+ box starts recording.</p>

The great news is that I have now found the links and now it really is possible to install
<a href="http://anytime.sky.com/mobile.aspx">Sky Anytime on Mobile</a> on my W960i although some features are not fully working.
</p>
<p><b>Sky for Mobiles</b></p>
<p>
The main reason I want to run Sky for Mobiles on my W960i is so that I can use
my phone to send remote record to my Sky+ box to record programs when I am away from home.</p>
<p>
<b>Register With Sky Anytime</b></p>
<p>
Before installing Sky for Mobiles on your W960i you will need to create a My Sky
account at <a href="http://www.sky.com">www.sky.com</a>.
</p>
<p>
Next register with Remote Record which will require you to enter your account
details and Sky Viewing Card number. I performed this step long before I got my
W960i so I don't remember the specifics and I certainly don't want to meddle
with something that is currently working.</p>

<b>The W960i is not compatible with Sky Anytime...</b>

<p>
Unfortunately you won't be able to use the Sky website to complete the Sky Anytime install on your W960i</p>

<p>
I had a devil of a job opening these links. At first I could open the web folders and download the files but later I started to get
<font color="#0000FF">HTTP 403 Forbidden errors</font>. Sometimes I find I can still access the files so if you have problems I recommend that you
persevere and you might get lucky.

</p>
<p>
Next open the web folder at <a href="http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/SonyE_vid">http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/SonyE_vid</a>.
You may need to cut and paste the URL to the address bar in Internet Explorer.</p>
<p>
<b>Download To Your PC</b></p>
<p>
The web contains 2 files called
<a href="http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/SonyE_vid/SkyMobile_SonyWithTv.jad">SkyMobile_SonyWithTv.jad</a> and
<a href="http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/SonyE_vid/SkyMobile_SonyWithTv.jar">SkyMobile_SonyWithTv.jar</a>. Right click each file and select

<p>
Attach your W960i phone to your PC using the USB cable and select USB Normal

<p><b>PSP Video 9</b>
</p>
<p>
The <a href="http://www.pspvideo9.com">
PSP Video 9</a> homepage is located at <a href="http://www.pspvideo9.com">
http://www.pspvideo9.com</a>
</p>
<p>PSP Video 9 is a free program which runs on a PC which is intended for
converting video files to view on a Sony PSP portable games console but the good
news is that converted video files will also run on other devices.</p>
<p>So far I have converted .wmv, avi, .mpg and mov files in sizes from 20Mb to
1.5GB and so far not one video file converted to MPEG-4 (.mp4) has failed to
convert and run perfectly on my W960i.</p>
<p>
<b>Step By Step Guide To Using PSP Video 9</b>
</p>
<p>At first sight PSP Video 9 can be a little confusing to use. By default it
uses a wizard screen to manage the conversion and of course it assumes that you
are using a Sony PSP.</p>
<p>
W960i phone users should bypass the wizard and go straight to the Convert tab
and click Convert Video. Now find and select the video file to be converted...
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ccc.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ccc.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>PSP Video 9 conversion in progress...</b>
</p>
<p>Depending on the size of the movie the conversion will take several minutes but it is generally quicker to convert a video file than to watch.</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9qq.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9qq.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>Select a profile...</b>
</p>
<p>PSP Video 9 supports a multitude of formats and after extensive
experimentation and testing the profile that I recommend for the W960i is
<font color="#0000FF">Fw2.80+ MPEG4 320x240 768kbps Stereo/128kbps</font>. This profile was able to convert every video file and every video file worked on my W960i.
</p>
<p>This profile has the correct screen resolution of 240x320 pixels for the
W960i so the video player does not have to use extra processing power to resize
the video output.
</p>
<p>The video bit rate is set at 768kbps which seems to be a rate that the W960i
can handle. I noticed that video files with a higher bit rate would not play on
the W960i.</p>
<p>The audio bit rate is set at 129kbps which again seems to be a rate the the
W960i can handle.</p>
<p>
Other profiles include <font color="#0000FF">Fw1.50+ MPEG4 320x240 768kbps Stereo/128kbps</font> and <font color="#0000FF">Fw1.50+ MPEG4 320x240 768kbps Stereo/128kbps 2-Pass</font>. Using these profiles it was not possible to convert all video files. I could not see any quality advantage of the 2-Pass conversion over the 1-Pass conversion.</p>
<p>
<b>Settings Galore</b>
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss1.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss1.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>PSP Video 9 Profiles...</b>
</p>
<p>
Choose your profile carefully. The correct profile will ensure that firstly your video file will convert and secondly that the converted video will play on your W960i.
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss2.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss2.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>Select the Encoder...</b>
</p>
<p>
Sorry I don't know my MI from my MH and my MIMB.
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss3.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss3.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>Now select the Video Codec...</b>
</p>
<p>
My investigations indicate that MPEG-4 will work with the W960i but MPEG-4 AVC will not.
</p>
<p>PSP Video 9 provides extensive settings which you can experiment with. In
particular you can select the MPEG-4 AVC Video Codec. According to Sony Ericsson
the W960i should support the AVC variant but I could not get any video files
converted using the MPEG-4 AVC Video Codec to play on the W960i.
</p>
<p>
It is possible that other converter application that support AVC will work with the W960i so it is very much a case of matching your video file to your converter program to your device and also take into account the video software installed on your W960i phone.
</p>

</table>
<p>Every video file I tried was converted by PSP Video 9 and played without
problem son my W960i.</p>
<p><b>Beware The File Name...</b></p>
<p>
Another issue that I noticed was that the video player provided with the
W960i can be very particular about the video file name. One video would not play
until all the spaces were removed from the file name while another video file
with a longer name and also containing spaces would play without problems.

A new W960i World Generic 1 firmware is now available from the Sony Ericsson website.
</p>
<p>
To install the new firmware you need to download SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) from the Sony Ericsson website but the new version will only install on World Generic 1 firmware versions of W960i phones.
</p>
<p>
If you have a firmware version that is customised by your mobile phone provider then you can also also use SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) to check if a new firmware version is available to update your customised firmware.
</p>
<p>
At the time of writing the firmware update will only install on World Generic 1 versions of the W960i and there is no update currently available for Vodafone users.
</p>
<p>
I will try to find out more information such as what new features and bug fixes are included and if it is possible or even suitable for flashing over the standard Vodafone customised firmware.
</p>
<p>
The new firmware does include a great new snowboarding game called SSX 3.
</p>
<p>
One problem that I can foresee is that Vodafone have probably customised their standard firmware and if I flash my W960i with a generic firmware then I will lose any Vodafone customised applications and features.
</p>
<p>
One good thing would be that the locked down bookmarks in the web browser would be blown away.
</p>
<p>
More details to follow...

The user guide booklet provided with my W960i was the generic Sony Ericsson offering with no Vodafone customisation. The standard user guide is useful up to a point but it really only gives vague indications of what can be archived and how it is done and certainly does not qualify as a user manual.
</p>
<p>
One comment near the beginning of the user guide states that an PC version of the user guide is available at <a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/support">http://www.sonyericsson.com/support</a> and additionally I should be able to access the web guide from my phone by following <font color="#0000FF">Main Menu -> Web -> More -> View -> Bookmarks -> Web Guide</font>. Unfortunately Vodafone seems to have omitted this link from my W960i.

<b>W960i Web Guide on my PC...</b>
</p>
<p>
I finally managed to track down the PC version of the W960i Web Guide which is located at <a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/webguide/w960i/pc/en/">http://www.sonyericsson.com/webguide/w960i/pc/en/</a>.
</p>
<p>
The online guide is not identical to the printed user guide but I'm not sure if it is much more use. My main criticism is that none of the user guides from Sony Ericsson or Vodafone contain any meaningful help for the UIQ 3.0 user interface let alone useful examples and screen shots. Still if you find you are lost with UIQ 3.0 then this site should set you on the correct path.
</p>
<p>
I tried to load the W960i Web Guide in my W960i phone using Opera and Opera Mini but the online guide uses a heavy javascript menu and exercise was not very satisfactory. Trust Sony Ericsson to write an online user guide for a mobile phone which can't be read on a mobile phone.
</p>
<p>
Perhaps there is a mobile version of the user guide which I haven't found yet. If know of one then please let me know.

<b>That's what I call a scribble...</b>
</p>
<p>
The scribble test threw up some interesting results. My scribbling was limited to small circles but occasionally a glitch seemed to write a line all the way across the screen. These glitches are visible along the top edge and in the bottom quarter. The last few pixels around the edges do not appear to be accessible.
</p>
<p>
I was very impressed by how accurate the stylus was and at just 1 pixel width just how fine the the recorded line really was. Contract the line thickness with the handwriting recognition which uses a thicker line.
</p>
<p>
If you decide to use the Service Menus then please be careful because bad things could happen and I take no responsibility.
</p>
<p>
As far as I know the Service Menus code is the same for other Sony Ericsson phones such as P1i, W950i, P990i and M600i.

My Sony Ericsson W960i arrived in rather flimsy black box. As the only packaging protecting the box was a carrier bag it all got a bit squashed and battered. Thankfully my W960i survived.
</p>
<p>
<b>W960</b>
</p>
<p>
The printing on the side of the box just has <b>W960</b> so what happened to the 'i'? To st my mind at rest the box has a sticker describing the contents as <b>W960i Vinyl Black</b>.
</p>
<p>
Oddly the button of the box is actually much more interesting then the top and sides.
</p>
<p>
<b>W960</b> is the Sony Ericsson general product designation and the extra letter indicates the local market designation
</p>
<p>
<b>'i'</b> indicates International which includes Europe and Asia (except China and Japan)
</p>
<p>
<b>'a'</b> indicates America
</p>
<p>
<b>'c'</b> indicates China

I am not particularly paranoid about keeping my gadgets in perfect condition. After all my W960i phone is a tool that is meant to be used and enjoyed.
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/W960i.png">

<b>The W960i touch screen is not scratch proof...</b>
</p>
<p>
The screen on my Sony Ericsson W960i Smartphone is made from a polycarbonate material and the screen is flush to the front of the phone. The advantage of a flush screen is that it is easier to use the touch screen with fat fingers but a disadvantage is that the screen is more prone to damage.
</p>
<p>
I have now been using my W960i for just over a month and although the touch screen polishes up beautifully I can just see some tiny nicks in the surface when the light is reflected in just the right way. I am however pleased to report that there are no actual scratches on the touch screen. By the way, I don't keep change or keys in my phone pocket.

After a period of use and especially after using handwriting recognition it is possible to see faint stylus trails across the touch screen. The good news is that these trails are not permanent and they soon disappear when the screen is wiped across the front of my t-shirt.
</p>
<p>
<b>Screen Protector</b>
</p>
<p>
When my Sony Ericsson W960i was supplied it did not have a screen protector and as far as I know from reading various on-line message boards it is standard that the W960i is not supplied with a screen protector so if yours doesn't have one then it is not an indication that yours is a pre-owned phone.

<b>Most video files cause an error...</b>
</p>
<p>I have various video files on my PC including .wmv, avi, .mpg and mov. All these
videos will play on my PC using <font color="#0000FF">Windows Media Player</font> or <font color="#0000FF">QuickTime</font> but when I
copy them to the media memory of my W960i not one of them will play using the built in Video Player.</p>
<p>Even .mp4 video files that work perfectly on my PC will not work on my W960i.</p>
<p>
<b>H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC</b>
</p>
<p>
<font color="#0000FF">H.264</font> is a standard for video compression which is also known as <font color="#0000FF">MPEG-4 Part 10</font> or more commonly as <font color="#0000FF">MPEG-4 AVC</font> (for Advanced Video Coding).
</p>
<p>
<b>Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1</b>
</p>
<p>
<font color="#0000FF">Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1</font> is a very slick program which is available as a free download from the Sony Ericsson website but the <font color="#0000FF">Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1 Pro</font> version costs an additional <b>$9.99</b> and apparently it will convert video files to the format supported by my W960i.
</p>
<p>
According to the help file a Sony Ericsson phone supports some .mp4 and .3gp video files and mention is made of <font color="#0000FF">.mp4 (Sony AVC/AAC)</font> and <font color="#0000FF">.mp4 (MPEG4 part 2)</font> but there is no information on the exact format and settings.
</p>
<p><b>3 Choices</b></p>
<p>If I want to watch movies or films on my W960i then I think I have 3 choices:<br>
1. Purchase Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1 Pro at a cost of $9.99<br>
2. Use a 3rd party Video player such as <font color="#0000FF">PowerMovie</font> at a cost of $19.99<br>
3. Convert my video files into a format supported by the W960i Video Viewer at a
cost of $??.??</p>
<p>Not surprisingly my choice is option 3 and if at all possible at a cost of $Free.</p>
<p>The tricky part is to find a video converter program which will accept the
greatest number of source video formats and to then work out which video formats
and bit rates work best with the W960i.
</p>
<p><b>PSP Video 9</b>
</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.pspvideo9.com">
PSP Video 9</a> homepage is located at <a href="http://www.pspvideo9.com">
http://www.pspvideo9.com</a>
</p>
<p>
<b>Step By Step Guide To Using PSP Video 9</b>
</p>
<p>At first sight PSP Video 9 can be a little confusing to use. By default it
uses a wizard screen to manage the conversion and of course it assumes that you
are using a Sony PSP.</p>
<p>
W960i phone users should bypass the wizard and go straight to the Convert tab
and click Convert Video. Now find and select the video file to be converted...
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ccc.png">

<b>PSP Video 9 conversion in progress...</b>
</p>
<p>Depending on the size of the movie the conversion will take several minutes but it is generally quicker to convert a video file than to watch.</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9qq.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9qq.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>Select a profile...</b>
</p>
</p>
<p>This profile has the correct screen resolution of 240x320 pixels for the
W960i so the video player does not have to use extra processing power to resize
the video output.
</p>
<p>
<p>
<b>Settings Galore</b>
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss1.png">

<b>PSP Video 9 Profiles...</b>
</p>
<p>
Choose your profile carefully. The correct profile will ensure that firstly your video file will convert and secondly that the converted video will play on your W960i.
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss2.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss2.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>Select the Encoder...</b>
</p>
<p>
Sorry I don't know my MI from my MH and my MIMB.
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss3.png">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/Video/pspvideo9ss3.png" border="1" width="95%" ></a><br/>
<b>Now select the Video Codec...</b>
</p>
<p>
My investigations indicate that MPEG-4 will work with the W960i but MPEG-4 AVC will not.
</p>
</p>
<p>
It is possible that other converter application that support AVC will work with the W960i so it is very much a case of matching your video file to your converter program to your device and also take into account the video software installed on your W960i phone.

<p><b>Beware The File Name...</b></p>

W960i can be very particular about the video file name. One video would not play
until all the spaces were removed from the file name while another video file
with a longer name and also containing spaces would play without problems.</p>Warfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15457717201514678877noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258699333674017311.post-10126791724964287592008-02-14T17:40:00.003+00:002008-02-23T18:55:33.784+00:00Using USB To Charge My W960i<p>
If I'm not careful I can run down the battery on my W960 in less than a working day and if I'm not going straight home after work then there is a serious possibility of completely discharging the battery.
</p>
<p>
To combat this problem I now take a USB cable to work and as my PC at work has some front facing USB ports it is no problem to plug in during the day and using a USB cable saves me having to carry a power supply adapter around.
</p>
<p>
There are however a couple of issues with USB charging.
</p>
<p>
1. If the W960i is plugged in to a new PC then it will not charge using the USB cable until the Sony Ericsson drivers are installed on the PC. The good news is that you don't have to carry your installer CD around with you because the Windows New Hardware wizard will automatically download the drivers from the Internet and once installed on the PC the W960i will start charging. The downside is that sometimes the owner of the PC may not be too happy for me to be installing unknown drivers downloaded from the Internet and of course the PC needs to be connected to the Internet.
</p>
<p>
2. Charging with the AC adapter is very rapid but charging the W960i using USB is so damn slow.
</p>
<p>
I don't know if other Sony Ericsson smartphones such as P1i, W950i, P990i and M600i charge using USB with or without drivers.

I'm trying to install and use the Sky Anytime On Mobile application on my W960i.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/sky-logo-small.png" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
With Sky Anytime On Mobile I should be able to see a whole weeks TV listings
on my W960i and be able to set Sky+ to record the programs that I want to watch.
</p>
<p>
The first problem is that the W960i is not one of the supported phones.
</p>
<p>
The next problem is that I need to use my desktop PC to login to My Sky so that I can have a text message sent to my W960i but the Sky web server keeps timing out.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/SkyAnytimeMobileNotSupported.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
I used my W960i to view the web page at
<a href="http://mobile.sky.com/skyapp/">http://mobile.sky.com/skyapp/</a>
and it is confirmed that the W960i and probably all UIQ phones are not supported.
</p>
<p>
Has anyone out there managed to get Sky Anytime working on a W960i?
</p>Warfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15457717201514678877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258699333674017311.post-89936241880179174332008-02-13T22:01:00.013+00:002008-02-23T18:50:06.535+00:00My Vodafone Logon Problem Is Fixed<p>
I have been having a really annoying problem with my Vodafone data connections. The problem is that after a few minutes of using a 3G connection to view web pages I get a connection failure and my W960i screen displays the dreaded Logon Failed error.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/09/NotLoggedIn/3GAttachedLogonFailed.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
I decided I needed help and so I called Vodafone and spoke to a very nice man in technical and I'm very sorry that I didn't make a note of his name because he spent 45 minutes working through the problem with me. He was certainly a Sony Ericsson enthusiast and said he had a dying W950i and was waiting to upgrade to a W960i.
</p>
<p>
Amongst other things we used
<a href="http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/">http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/</a>
to investigate which base station I was using from my home location and he was able to tell me how many successful connections the 3G mast outside my house had handled that day. I think that part of my 3G performance issues could be because my local phone mast was located where it is to provide coverage to the nearby Tesco Superstore so there are lots of people using my nearest mast.
</p>
<p>
<b>Blame ActiveSync?</b>
</p>
<p>
We also discussed the 3G account settings on my W960i and especially my Vodafone Wap and Vodafone Internet accounts. I was correctly using the Vodafone Wap account to view web pages but the Vodafone tech guy then suggested that Exchange ActiveSync could be causing my 3G data connection to disconnect.
</p>
<p>
The theory is that the W960i can only use one connection at a time. For most of the time I only use one mobile application at a time so if applications use different connections such as Vodafone Wap and Vodafone Internet then there is no problem if the phone changes the connection as I move from application to application.
</p>
<p>
My Exchange ActiveSync application was configured to use the Vodafone Internet account but remember that Exchange ActiveSync runs in the background and if Push Email is enabled then new connections will be made in the background at the same time as I am using the Vodafone Wap connection for viewing web pages.
</p>
<p>
To test if Exchange ActiveSync was the cause of my Logon Failed problems I have used my W960i for the last 24 hours with ActiveSync turned off and I'm very pleased to say that even though I have made heavy use of my 3G data connection I have not had a single Logon Failed problem in the time that ActiveSync has been turned off.
</p>
<p>
So far so good. I will monitor progress for a few days and then I will try turning ActiveSync back on but I will try using the Vodafone Wap connection instead of the Vodafone Internet connection.
</p>
<p>
A big thank you to Vodafone technical for their patience.
</p>
<p>
If this solution worked for my W960i then it might for other Symbian UIQ 3.0 smartphones such as P1i, W950i, P990i and M600i.

<i>
<font color="#0000FF">
Since writing this article I have discovered that the cause of my failed login was having Exchange ActiveSync running in the background. See <a href="http://myw960i.blogspot.com/2008/02/my-vodafone-logon-problem-is-fixed.html">My Vodafone Logon Problem Is Fixed</a>
</font>
</i>
</p>
<p>I have a major <font color="#0000FF"><b>"Logon Failed"</b></font> problem when I use my Vodafone 3G data
connection with my Sony Ericsson W960i.</p>
<p>Typically I am browsing the web using <font color="#0000FF">Opera Mini</font> or watching
<font color="#0000FF">Mobile TV</font> and
every few minutes I get a connection failure.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/09/NotLoggedIn/3GAttachedLogonFailed.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/09/NotLoggedIn/3GNetworkStatusIcons.PNG" border="1" width="85" height="34" align="left" />
If I check my network status by selecting the signal strength icon
on the status bar of my W960i then the error message displayed is <font color="#0000FF">
<b>Vodafone UK, 3G: Attached (Logon failed)</b></font>.
</p>
<p>It is extremely annoying to get this error because it indicates that I have
got a successful 3G connection and the actual problem is failing to logon to the Vodafone
network. Obviously this is not the sort of logon where I an required to type in a
username and password because I have a Vodafone contract so my W960i should
always logon automatically. Only Vodafone can say why this problem is occurring.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/09/NotLoggedIn/3GFlightMode.PNG" border="1" />

I have discovered that I can temporarily resolve the problem by switching to
<font color="#0000FF">Flight Mode</font> and then back to <font color="#0000FF">Phone Mode</font>
which causes my W960i to retry the logon to the Vodafone network.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/09/NotLoggedIn/3G-Attached.PNG" border="1" />

<p>The screen shot above shows the desired result which is <font color="#0000FF">Phone Mode</font> with
<font color="#0000FF">3G:
Attached</font> and successfully a successful logon to the Vodafone network.</p>

also to other Symbian UIQ 3.0 smartphones such as P1i, W950i, P990i and M600i.</p><p>

If you get it wrong the best that can happen is that an application won't work.
The worst that can happen is that the application will connect using an expensive
data tariff and run up a huge bill before you realise it.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture01.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture05.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>Use the Internet accounts application to specify your <font color="#0000FF">Internet
Accounts</font> and <font color="#0000FF">Internet Groups</font>.</p>
<p>If <font color="#0000FF">Vodafone</font> is your mobile service provider your
W960i should have been supplied with preconfigured Internet connections which are
called <font color="#0000FF">Contract Wap</font> and <font color="#0000FF">Contract
Internet</font>?</p>
<p><b>Use Contract Wap For Web Browsing</b></p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture02.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>Contract Wap allows you to access specific <font color="#0000FF">Vodafone</font>
content such as <font color="#0000FF">Vodafone Live</font> and
<font color="#0000FF">Mobile TV</font>.</p>
<p>Using <font color="#0000FF">Contract Wap</font> will allow you to connect the
<font color="#0000FF">live.vodafone.com</font> portal and will ensure that all images
that you download are downsized for your mobile. Controlling image sizes is important
because it helps you to stay under your monthly 120Mb Mobile Internet download limit.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture03.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture04.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>The <font color="#0000FF">Contract Wap</font> connection will also allow you
to turn on the optional Vodafone facility to tailor your web pages for mobile viewing
by breaking a page into numbered sections although I don't recommend using this
feature as I don't think it is needed on the large screen W960i.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture02a.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>You can also access your on-line favourites stored on the Vodafone website.</p>
<p>If you use Contract Internet for web browsing then you will not be able to access
Vodafone Live and your images will be downloaded full size as they would be normally
for a desktop PC. Downloading full size images on a mobile phone is unnecessary
and uses up more of your download allowance.</p>
<p><b>Use Contract Internet For Applications</b></p>
<p>Use <font color="#0000FF">Contract Internet</font> for <font color="#0000FF">
ActiveSync</font> and other data applications.</p>
<p><font color="#0000FF">Contact Internet</font> makes a direct connection to the
remote server which is ideal for data applications. The data will not be interfered
with or modified by Vodafone. Be aware that if you download a large email attachment
then you could use up your entire monthly download allowance in one go.</p>
<p><b>How To Specify The Connection</b></p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture05.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>The Vodafone supplied web browser uses the Internet connection specified by your
default group. Your default group is the one shown in <font color="#0000FF"><i>italics</i></font>.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture06.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>Other applications such as <font color="#0000FF">ActiveSync</font> have a tab
where you can specify the connection to use.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture07.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture08.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/08/ContractWapVsContractInternet/capture09.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>For Java applications such as <font color="#0000FF">Google Maps</font> or
<font color="#0000FF">Opera Mini</font> you can set the connection on a per application
basis using <b>Control Panel, Security, MIDlet accounts</b>. In my experience the
Java applications will work using either Contact Wap or Contact Internet so to be
on the safe side I use Contact Wap.</p>
<p>If you have a Vodafone PAYT service then you need to substitute PAYT Wap and
PAYT Internet for Contact Wap and Contract Internet respectively.</p>
<p>This explanation applies to the Sony Ericsson W960i and it probably applies also
to other Symbian UIQ 3.0 smartphones such as P1i, W950i, P990i and M600i.</p>
<p>Good luck and please post your progress in the comments section.</p>Warfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15457717201514678877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258699333674017311.post-4230682052976908792008-02-07T21:54:00.001+00:002008-02-23T18:41:29.541+00:00Using Google Maps On My W960i<p>
Google Maps is possibly the best ever application provided for mobile phones and
it is totally free!!!</p>
<p>
This article will show what to expect if you install Google Maps on your Sony
Ericsson W960i.</p>
<p>
For a guide to installing Google Maps from the Vodafone website look at this
article
<a href="http://myw960i.blogspot.com/2008/01/installing-google-maps-on-my-w960i.html">
Installing Google Maps On My W960i</a>
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture01.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
When you start the Google Maps application it will usually default the previous
location that you were viewing when you last used Google Maps.</p>
<p>
If you are connecting using 3G then Google Maps will show a
<font color="#0000FF">blue button</font>.</p>
<p>
Press the <font color="#0000FF">blue button</font> and the map will centre on
your approximate current location. Google Maps determines your location by
triangulating nearby mobile phone masts. It is only accurate to 1/2 a km but it
is a very useful feature for locating your approximate position.
</p>
<p>
I downloaded Google Maps from the Vodafone website. When Google Maps starts it briefly shows the Vodafone logo so the application must have been customised by Vodafone. I don't know if the location feature will work if you obtain your Google Maps elsewhere.
</p>
<p>
You can also connect using WLAN (WiFi) in which case the blue button is not
shown and it is not possible to find your current loaction.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture02.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Zoom out and you can view the entire country or even the whole world!!!</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture03.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Choose between <font color="#0000FF">map view</font> and <font color="#0000FF">
satellite view</font>. Of course the satellite pictures were really made using a
low flying aircraft but they really work well even on a mobile phone. My
favourite use for satellite view is looking for side roads which might allow
free parking.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture04.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
You can navigate by dragging the stylus over the screen which causes the map to
scroll.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture05.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Google Maps support <font color="#0000FF">favourite places</font>. A favourite
place is shown as a star on the map.
</p>
<p>
I had a problem when I started using Google Maps because the map seemed to be
locked to my home location which was also the favourite in slot number
one. While the favourite was in slot number one I couldn't scroll away from that
location. When I removed the favourite from slot number one the problem went
away.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture06.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <font color="#0000FF">Search</font> facility is very useful and really easy
to use.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture07.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Search for fast food, pizza or just a local pub.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture08.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Search for a pub and Google Maps will populate the screen with little markers
showing the location of nearby pubs. Use the left and right arrow buttons to
scroll from pub to pub.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture09.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Select a pub to see full address details and even the telephone number.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture10.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
More details and a website too are just one click away.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture11.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Directions too are just one click away.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture12.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
If you select directions then Google Maps will plot your route and give you step
by step directions.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/02/07/UsingGoogleMaps/capture13.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Click the left and right scroll buttons to view the next instruction in
sequence.</p>
<p>
Although supported by Google Maps there is currenly no traffic information in
the UK.</p>Warfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15457717201514678877noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258699333674017311.post-90952117158452266192008-02-04T20:05:00.002+00:002008-02-23T19:00:10.680+00:00Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1 Released<span style="color:#3333ff;">Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1</span> is now available for download from the Sony Ericsson website.
<br/><br/>
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/SonyEricssonMediaManager1.1.png" border="1" width="400"/>
<br/>
I downloaded the new version and tried it with my W960i.
<br/><br/>
In this version the <span style="color:#3333ff;">Video Mode</span> tab is now unlocked but it only allows you to transfer existing video files which are compatible with your phone. You must still purchase Sony Ericsson Media Manager Pro at a cost of $9.95 if you want to use the program to encode your video into .mp4 or .3gp format.
<br/><br/>
In my case Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1 was unable to transfer any of my videos to my W960i. I copied the videos to my W960i manually but still none of the videos would play in Media Viewer. I believe that this is because my videos are in a variety of formats (.avi .mpg .mpeg .wmv) and although they play on my PC they need to be converted to play on my W960i. Some .wmv files did display a frozen frame in the W960i Media Viewer but I think the format needs to be downsized before it will play.
<br/><br/>
I assume that if I purchase Sony Ericsson Media Manager Pro then it will convert my videos to .mp4 format which can be played by my W960i.
<br/><br/>
Sony Ericsson Media Manager Pro will convert the following formats -<br/>
<span style="color:#3333ff;">
.mp4 (Sony AVC/AAC), .mp4 (MPEG4 part 2) *<br/>
.avi<br/>
.wmv<br/>
.mov *<br/>
.qt *<br/>
.dv<br/>
.mpg, .mpeg, .mpeg1, .mpeg2, .m1p, .mp1, .m2p, .m2t<br/>
.mmv<br/>
Unprotected DVD titles (such as DVD home movies or DVDs from a camcorder)<br/>
.3gp *<br/>
.m4v *<br/>
.DivX <br/>
.dvr-ms <br/>
</span>
<br/>
Video encoding to an MPEG-4 Visual profile is available only in Sony Ericsson Media Manager Pro so you probably need Pro to have any chance of watching a video on your W960i.
<br/><br/>
Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1 is a 38.4MB download from the Sony Ericsson website
<a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/products/software/w960i/sonyericssonmediamanager11english?cc=gb&lc=en">Sony Ericsson Media Manager 1.1</a>. </p>
<p>I have a 125Mb data allowance from Vodafone which costs me £10.00 per month.
If I exceed 125Mb then it costs me £1 per Mb. It is therefore crucial that my
W960i is configured with the correct connection settings.</p>
<p>The documentation and help is fairly sparse but I think I have figured out
how to configure network and internet connections on my SE W960i.</p>
<p><b>Accounts<br>
</b>First setup your accounts such as WAP, Internet and WLAN and then organise the
accounts into groups.</p>
<p><b>Groups<br>
</b>Each account can be assigned to one or more groups.<br>
In each group the accounts are placed in priority order.<br>
When an application needs to make a network connection it will connect using the
highest priority account in the group.</p>
<p><b>Default Group<br>
</b>The group name displayed in italics is the default group used by most
applications.</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-02-03_ConnectionsManager/01Connections/Connections02.PNG" border="1"/>

<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-02-03_ConnectionsManager/01Connections/Connections03.PNG" border="1"/>
</p>
<p>From Connections Manager select Settings and then Internet Accounts.</p>
<p align="center">

<p>I use the <font color="#0000FF">Contract Internet</font> account to connect
directly to a remote site or server and without using a proxy server. I use the
Contract Internet account for applications like <font color="#0000FF">ActiveSync</font>
and <font color="#0000FF">Google Maps</font>.</p>
<p>Be careful which applications you allow to connect using the Contact Internet
account as images are not compressed which means that you may be using up your
3G data allowance more rapidly then if a WAP connection was used.</p>

If you are considering getting a Sony Ericsson W960i of another UIQ 3.0 phone and you want to
use <font color="#0000FF">Direct Push</font> email or <font color="#0000FF">ActiveSync</font> but you are not sure what in involved then this article
may help you to know what to expect.
</p>
<p>
ActiveSync allows you have your latest Email, Calendar and Contacts to be always
available and up to date on your phone.
</p>
<p>
<font color="#0000FF">ActiveSync</font> is responsible for downloading the data to your phone. Your existing applications
for Email, Calendar and Contacts are then used to view the data. ActiveSync will then
upload any changes to your Exchange Server.
</p>
<p>
The most important thing to know is that to use <font color="#0000FF">ActiveSync</font> you <b>MUST</b> use a
<font color="#0000FF">Microsoft
Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2</font> or later for your email.
</p>
<p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync01x.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Sony Ericsson have been nice enough to bundle ActiveSync with the W960i free of charge.
The screenshot above shows how ActiveSync looks on a Sony Ericsson UIQ 3.0 phone
</p>
<p>
The actual ActiveSync product is really a program called <span style="color:#0000ff;">RoadSync </span>which
is produced by a company called DataViz <a href="http://www.dataviz.com/">http://www.dataviz.com</a>.
</p>
<p>
Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is a protocol developed by Microsoft which enables a remote device to talk
directly to MS Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 or MS Exchange Server 2007. This means that
your W960i will connect directly to your Exchange Server and it will not use any intermediate server.
</p>
<p>
Obviously the connection over the Internet is made through any necessary routers or firewalls.
</p>
<p>
The most obvious implication is that your email service <b>MUST</b> use Microsoft Exchange Server
and your Exchange Server <b>MUST</b> have the necessary available connections to the
Internet and the ActiveSync connections may be in addition to the standard SMTP and
POP3 connections that email servers use.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync01a.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">About</span> screen shows the version of ActiveSync supplied with the W960i.
</p>
<p>
The SE W960i uses Symbian OS v9.1, UIQ 3.0. Sony Ericsson bundles ActiveSync 2.015 with
the W960i which according to the Sony Ericsson website is the latest version but if
you need another copy then it is available on the website as a free of charge download.
</p>
<p>
The version of ActiveSync supplied with the W960i is Version 2.015 (342).
</p>
<p>
According to the DataViz website the equivalent product to ActiveSync is called RoadSync and the
current version is 2.003 - Released September 25, 2007.
</p>
<p>
Note that RoadSync for Symbian UIQ 3.1 is NOT compatible with Symbian UIQ 2.0 smartphones
(Sony Ericsson P900, P910, and Motorola A1000). Similarly, RoadSync for Symbian UIQ 2.0 is NOT compatible
with UIQ 3.1 smartphones.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync02.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">Server Tab</span> allows you to specify your server connection and to enter
your user name, password, server name and domain name.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync03.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Use the <span style="color:#0000ff;">Schedule Tab</span> to specify how frequently your email will synchronise with your Exchange Server.
</p>
<p>
Select the <span style="color:#0000ff;">Enable Push</span> checkbox to turn on push email and have your email synchronised on demand.
If you select Enable Push then you are warned that your Exchange Server 2003 must have Service Pack 2 or later installed.
</p>
<p>
If you don't use push email then you can choose a schedule of every 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, 12 hours and manual.
You can also chose which types of data to synchronise from Email, Calendar and Contacts. If you select Calendar
or Contacts then you are warned that turning on Calendar and/or Contacts data during scheduled sync may
result in much longer sync times.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync04.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">Mail Tab</span> is used to specify how long email is retained on your phone.
You can choose 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks and 1 month.
</p>
<p>
Use Email Size to set how much the size of the email to be downloaded. You can choose
1/2 KB, 1 KB, 5KB and All. Most of the time you only use your phone to read the first
part of an email so you can specify that only the first part of the email. The email
client allows you to download the rest of the email although I have not had much success with this feature.
</p>
<p>
You can specify to reply with history and you can add a signature. I use a signature
that explains that I an using mobile email so the recipient knows why
my reply may be brief and perhaps a little terse.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync05.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">Calendar Tab</span> allows you to specify the date range for calendar entries.
You can choose All, 2 weeks, 1 month and 6 months.
</p>
<p>
My impression is that all future calendar entries are synchronised and the date range
specifies how far back in time to keep entries on your phone.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync06.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">Contacts Tab</span> is used to enable the syncing of Contacts.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync07.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">Lock Tab</span> is used to turn on Corporate Lock.
</p>
<p>
According to Help, Corporate lock activates after a pre-determined period of inactivity and requiring a password.
I don't use it myself but assume that once the corporate lock has activated you have to enter a password to
continue reading your email.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync08.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">Advance Tab</span> allows you to turn on extra logging which can be useful when
trying to diagnose connection problems with your Exchange Server.
</p>
<p>
You can also turn on Use SSL. SSL (Secure Server Link) uses an SSL Certificate to encrypt the data transferred
between your phone and your Exchange Server. Using SSL is certainly a good idea which I recommend but so far
I have not been able to get ActiveSync to work with SSL. The problem could be becuase I use self-signed
certificates with my Exchange Server so perhaps my W960i does not trust me...
</p>
<p align="center"><img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync09.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
The <span style="color:#0000ff;">Chose Data Connection</span>
selector allows to chose what data connection group will be used by ActiveSync.
</p>
<p>
The list of groups displayed is dependent on your connection configuration.
Each group can contain one or more accounts. Some points to consider are to use a data
connection which does not use your service providers WAP connection and to use a WLAN (or WiFi)
account as the first account so that you will connect using WLAN if the service is available and
connect by 3G when you are away from a WLAN connection.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync10.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync09a.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
Once ActiveSync is configured it will soon connect to your Exchange Server and your latest Email,
Calendar and Contacts will be downloaded to your phone.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync11.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008-01-27c_SettingUpActiveSync/ActiveSync12a.PNG" border="1" />
</p>
<p>
ActiveSync delivers the data to your phone but you use your excising Email, Calendar and Contacts applications to view the data.

<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/VodafoneW960iFromFree.png" border="1"/>
</p>
I have been a Vodafone customer for donkeys years on a £25 per month contract and my previous 18 month contract had expired about a year a go.
<br/>
<br/>
I have been waiting to get the SE W960i so I called Vodafone sales and was told it would cost me £200 on an £18 month contract.
<br/>
<br/>
I said I could get the W960i for free on another network so I was put through to retentions and after some haggling on cost and refusing to accept a 24 month contract I managed to get the W960i at a cost of £20 (twenty) and still on £25 per month with an 18 month contract.
<br/>
<br/>
Doubtless others will have done better but I was happy with the deal.
<br/>
<br/>
I found the W960i is a real hand-full at first and it is taking a lot of getting used to so I have started a couple of blogs to help people out if they are stuck.

Google Maps is a great application but the bad news is that if the Vodafone (UK) website is
to be believed then the Google Maps is not available for your
Sony Ericsson W960i.
</p>
<p>
Read on to find out how to install the Vodafone version of Google Maps which contains the specific functions to work out your current location using Vodafone base stations (mobile phone masts).
</p>
<p>
<b>Google Maps from Vodafone</b>
</p>
<p align="center">
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/01/2008-01-27_InstallingMobileGoogleMaps/GoogleMapsVodafone.PNG">

<b>Google Maps customised by Vodafone...</b>
</p>
<p>
If you are with another mobile phone provider then you should use their version of Google Maps.
</p>
<p>
If you install a generic version of Google Maps or one from the wrong mobile phone provider then I think that the maps will work but the location feature will not work.
</p>
<p>
If you are abroad and you have the Vodafone version of Google Maps then I think that the maps will work but the location feature will not work because you will be using a roaming network.
</p>
<p>
One thing to bear in mind when you are abroad is that the data download for the maps may not be included in your monthly data allowance so it could get very expensive.
</p>
<p align="center">

</p>
<p>
<b>Download the Vodafone Version of Google Maps</b>
</p>
<p>
The good news that with a little effort Vodafone (UK) users can download Google
Maps for free. Here are some simple instructions for SE W960i users to use for installing
Google Maps from Vodafone (UK).
</p>
<p>
Using your desktop PC open Internet Explorer and go to
<a src="file:///U:/Phones/Blog/Published/2008-01-27d_InstallingMobileGoogleMaps/href=%22http://www.vodafone.co.uk%2522">
http://www.vodafone.co.uk</a>
</p>
<p>
Click on <font color="#0000ff">Mobile Internet</font> followed by
<font color="#0000ff">Manage My Mobile Internet </font>then in the menu on the left
side of the screen click on <font color="#0000ff">Mobile Applications</font>.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/01/2008-01-27_InstallingMobileGoogleMaps/GM0002.PNG" border="1">
</p>
<p>
You will now be treated to a tantalising list of available mobile applications
including <font color="#0000ff">eBay</font>, <font color="#0000ff">MusicStation</font>
and <font color="#0000ff">Google Maps</font> (drool).
</p>
<p>
The first problem is that Vodafone won't let you access any of the applications
until you identify the make and model of your phone so go ahead and choose the SE
W960i. But wait, disaster, there is no SE W960i available to select.
</p>
<p align="center">
<img height="267" src="http://www.zen6659.zen.co.uk/MyW960i/2008/01/2008-01-27_InstallingMobileGoogleMaps/GM0003.PNG" width="143" border="1">
</p>
<p>
The solution is to choose a different phone.
</p>
<p>
Certain applications only work with certain phones but if you choose the SE W900i
then at least the bar on Google Maps is removed and you can drag the Google Maps
icon over to the screen of your phantom W900i.
</p>
<p align="center">

</p>
<p>
Once Google Maps appears in the screen of your fictitious SE W900i you can enter
your mobile phone number into the box and click the <font color="#0000ff">Send to

Clicking the <font color="#0000ff">Send to my phone</font> button will cause
Vodafone (UK) to send your real W960i phone an SMS text message which contains a
link to allow you download Google Maps. The link is probably the same for all users
but I won't spoil the fun by giving it out here.
</p>
<p>
<b>Download Google Maps To Your W960i</b>

</p>
<p>
You can now open the link by selecting <font color="#0000ff">Options</font> and
<font color="#0000ff">Open in browser</font>.

</p>
<p>
Once you have opened the link the Google Maps application will be rapidly downloaded
to your W960i and you can select <font color="#0000ff">Install</font>.
</p>
<p>
<b>Run Google Maps On Your W960i</b>
</p>
<p>
Google Maps needs to connect to the Internet and I had equal success using the
Vodafone Contract Wap, Contract Internet or WLAN (WiFi).

<p>
I have to say that Google Maps on my W960i is an amazing application which almost
alone justifies the purchase of the phone.
</p>
<p>
See <A style="color: #ff6633" href="http://myw960i.blogspot.com/2008/02/using-google-maps-on-my-w960i.html">Using Google Maps On My W960i</A> to see Google Maps for Mobiles in use including the amazing almost GPS like location finding feature
which shows your position on the map with an accuracy up to 1000 metres. Truly amazing!!!
</p>
<p>
I really can't understand why Sony or even Vodafone (UK) don't promote Google Maps for Mobile a little
more.
</p>
<p>
Please note that although Google Maps for Mobiles is free to download and the software
is free to download from Vodafone (UK) it does require a data tariff to use Google
Maps over a 3G connection. The current location feature will only work if you are connected using Contract Wap or Contract Internet. The maps work perfectly with a WLAN (WiFi) connection but the current location feature does not work with WLAN.
</p>
<p>
To set the data connection for Google Maps for Mobiles go to Tools -> Control Panel -> Security -> MIDlet accounts. Select Google Maps and set the Internet Account to Contract Wap.
